Minimal Regatta

Well, we made it to Key West in time to see the 19th Annual Schooner Wharf Bar Minimal Regatta held this weekend.  Defiantly a must see if you are ever in the neighborhood during Memorial Day.

Here is a list of the rules and some pictures of the entries.

Minimal Regatta Construction Rules
1. One sheet of 4' x 8' x 1/4" plywood
2. Two 2" x 4" x 8'
3. One pound of fasteners
4. One roll of 2" x 60 yard duct tape
5. No caulking or adhesives - Epoxy paint is permitted
6. Painting of boats is optional

Boats are judged on creativity of design, paint, and of course speed. They also give awards for sportsmanship and the quickest sinker. Basically, everyone wins.

There were about 32 or 33 entries, they were the most imaginative boats and crew we’ve ever seen so we got quite a laugh. I’m sure you can imagine the results as the colorful citizens of Key West paddle their homemade “boat” around the race coarse.  About a third of the boats sunk on the starting line. You should watch the videos on YouTube our pictures don’t show enough.
